Instructions for Preparing a Trading Card Design
Important note about borders and centering: Keep borders well inside the card’s edges, as normal cutting variations can make them appear uneven. Perfect centering cannot be guaranteed, and slight shifts within normal production tolerances do not qualify for reprints or refunds.
If your design requires more precise centering, please choose our Die-Cut Custom Trading Cards option.
If you need help adjusting your files, please select a File Prep option from the dropdown menu on the product page.
1. Understanding the Dimensions:
- Final Card Size: 2.5 x 3.5 inches.
- Bleed Area: An additional 0.125 inches on each side.
- Template Size: 2.625 x 3.625 inches (including the bleed).
- Inner Safety Area: All important information should be within 2.375 x 3.375 inches to avoid being cut off during trimming.
2. Creating the Template:
- Open your design software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, GIMP).
- Create a new document with dimensions 2.625 x 3.625 inches.
- Set the resolution to at least 300 DPI (dots per inch) for high-quality print.
- Set up guides or margins to mark the bleed area and inner safety area:
- Bleed Guides: Set guides at 0.125 inches from the edges.
- Safety Area Guides: Set guides at 0.25 inches from the edges (i.e., 0.125 inches beyond the bleed).

3. Color Modes:
- RGB (Red, Green, Blue): Used for digital displays. RGB has a wider color gamut but is not ideal for printing.
- CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black): Used for printing. Ensure your design is converted to CMYK to better represent the printed outcome.
- To convert your design from RGB to CMYK in Adobe software:
- In Photoshop: Go to
Image > Mode > CMYK Color. - In Illustrator: Go to
File > Document Color Mode > CMYK Color.
- In Photoshop: Go to
4. Design Considerations:
- Bleed Area: Extend the background color and any design elements that touch the edge of the card into the bleed area. This ensures there are no white edges after trimming.
- Safety Area: Keep all important text, logos, and key design elements within the 2.375 x 3.375 inches safety area. This prevents them from being cut off during the trimming process.
- Borders and Centered Objects: Avoid using thin borders close to the edge. Slight shifts during trimming can make borders look uneven. Similarly, ensure that any objects meant to be centered are slightly adjusted towards the middle to accommodate possible shifts.
5. Finalizing and Exporting the Design:
- Double-check that all important elements are within the safety area.
- Ensure the background extends fully into the bleed area.
- Save your working file in the native format of your design software (e.g., .PSD for Photoshop, .AI for Illustrator).
- Export the final design as a PDF or high-resolution image (JPEG or PNG) in CMYK color mode.
- Ensure to embed or flatten all fonts and images to prevent issues during printing.
By following these steps, you can ensure your trading card design is print-ready, with all critical elements safely within the margins and the design extending into the bleed area for a professional finish.
