The Rarest Custom Trading Cards We’ve Ever Built: A Hand-Crafted Telum II Card With a Real Processor Chip Embedded Inside

Reprint Courtesy of IBM Corporation © (2026)

Some print projects are “high-end.”
And then there are projects that feel like you’re building a museum artifact—one piece at a time, with equal parts patience and obsession.

This was one of those.

We were commissioned to create an ultra-limited run of custom trading cards featuring the Telum II processor chip—not as a graphic, not as a gimmick, but embedded in the center of the card itself like a display-grade centerpiece. The final build was a hand-crafted, 60pt-thick collector card, constructed with black museum board, finished with multiple layers of black and gold foil, and presented in magnetic “one-touch” style holders with custom black-on-black foil stamped holder boxes.

The end result: 50 cards, built across 300+ hours, with the kind of time investment you usually associate with sculpture—not printing.

A trading card that isn’t just printed—it’s constructed

Most trading cards are flat by design. Even premium ones—foil, spot UV, textured laminations—still live in a world of thin stocks and traditional finishing.

This project demanded something completely different:

  • A true multi-layer construction, not a simple print-and-laminate workflow
  • A precision cavity to seat a real processor chip
  • A final piece thick enough to feel like a “collectible object,” not paper goods
  • A finish worthy of the subject: black-on-black luxury, accented with chip-matched gold foil

When you hold a 60pt card, you don’t just see it—you feel it. That thickness gives the card a weight and presence that immediately communicates rarity.

The concept: honoring a processor chip with craftsmanship

A processor chip is engineered at an extreme level of precision. It felt wrong to represent that with a standard card stock print.

So we took a different approach: build a card that matches the spirit of the technology.

A processor chip is layers—substrate, microstructures, careful alignment. So our card became layers too: a structural museum-board core, engineered face layers, and a central “window” where the chip becomes the focal point.

The goal was simple: make the card feel like it belongs in a display case the moment you pick it up.

The build: 60pt thick, black museum board, designed around the chip

Why black museum board?

Museum board isn’t just “thicker paper.” It behaves differently:

  • It’s dense and stable
  • It produces clean, rich edges (especially in black)
  • It creates a true core you can engineer around—critical when you’re embedding a physical object

That core became the backbone of the entire build. Everything else—foil, face layers, alignment, and finishing—was planned around keeping the card flat, consistent, and durable.

The foil wasn’t chosen—it was engineered to match the chip

Foil choices weren’t pulled from a standard “gold and black” menu. The foil was custom selected specifically to match the processor chip—its tone, contrast, and the way it catches light—so the chip doesn’t feel like something added to the card. It feels like the card was built for it (because it was).

The two-step foil method that made the finish possible

This part matters, because it’s one of the details that separates a “nice foil card” from a truly premium build:

We laid down the black foil first, then pressed the gold foil over the black foil as a second step.

That order was intentional. The black foil created a flat, consistent foundation, which helped the gold foil stamp with clean, even coverage. It’s a technique that reduces patchiness, improves edge crispness, and keeps the gold looking smooth and solid—especially important on a build like this where the finish sits right beside an embedded processor chip and every reflection gets noticed.

In other words: the foil wasn’t just there to shine. It was there to look flawless.

The hardest part: embedding a real processor chip into a collector card

Printing something that looks like a chip is easy.
Embedding a real processor chip inside a hand-built 60pt trading card is a different universe.

What made it difficult wasn’t just one step—it was the chain of steps that all had to be right:

  • Precision tolerances: the cavity needed to be exact or the face layers wouldn’t lay flat
  • Surface leveling: tiny height differences can cause bowing or telegraphing
  • Adhesive control: too much risks squeeze-out; too little risks long-term stability
  • Pressing and curing: consistent pressure without damaging the chip or warping the build
  • Finishing accuracy: trimming thick builds is unforgiving—every edge reveals the construction

This is the point where the “printing” mindset ends and the “fabrication” mindset begins.

300+ hours for 50 cards: why it took so long

When someone hears “300 hours,” the first reaction is usually: How?

Here’s the reality: limited-run, engineered objects don’t scale like normal print. The time isn’t just production—it’s problem-solving and control.

A project like this includes:

  • prototyping and test builds
  • material experimentation (board behavior, foil behavior, adhesives, pressure)
  • alignment and registration testing
  • building repeatable steps so all 50 stay consistent
  • careful hand assembly and inspection
  • refinements and corrections to keep quality at a display level

And because these were meant to be rare, the quality bar wasn’t “good for print.”
It was “good enough to be displayed.”

Presentation matters: magnetic holders + black-on-black foil stamped boxes

A collectible like this has to arrive like a collectible.

Each card was housed in a magnetic trading card holder case, the kind of display that instantly communicates value and protection. Then we took it further with custom holder boxes printed on black card stock and foil stamped in black foil—a stealth-luxury finish that reveals itself as the light hits it.

It’s subtle on purpose. Premium pieces don’t have to shout.

Why these may be among the rarest custom trading cards ever produced

“Rare” gets thrown around a lot. But rarity becomes real when three things line up:

  1. Extremely limited quantity (50 total)
  2. Unusual materials and construction (60pt build + museum board core + embedded processor chip)
  3. High time cost per unit (300+ hours across a short run is a real-world limiter)

That combination makes replication unlikely. Not impossible—but impractical unless someone is willing to commit to the same level of craftsmanship.

And that’s what makes pieces like this special: they’re not just hard to find. They’re hard to repeat.

The bigger idea: the next era of collectibles is “artifact-level”

Physical collectibles are evolving. The future isn’t just shiny finishes—it’s objects that feel engineered, built to be displayed, built to be remembered.

That’s what this project represents:

  • technology + tactile craftsmanship
  • limited-run objects that feel like museum editions
  • packaging that becomes part of the story
  • a build process that treats the final piece like a permanent artifact

A trading card can be more than a card. It can be a physical legacy piece.

Closing: when printing becomes legacy work

Some jobs are about volume. Some are about speed.
This one was about legacy—creating something rare enough that, years from now, someone can pick it up and instantly understand the effort behind it.

Fifty cards.
Sixty-point thickness.
A real Telum II processor chip embedded in the center.
Black museum board.
A foil system custom selected to match the chip—and built with a deliberate two-step process: black foil first, gold foil over it for clean, flat coverage.

Hundreds of hours poured into doing it the hard way—because the hard way was the only way that felt worthy of what this piece represents.
